Komodo 4.3 improves find and replace
By Robert Mullins
March 10, 2008 —
In an attempt to match the competition, ActiveState has redesigned the Komodo IDE’s find-and-replace function, tweaked other features, and added the ability to work with leading version control systems.
The find-and-replace function, redesigned from January 2007’s Komodo 4.0, now has the ability to search across projects, replace text across files and search-and-replace across multiple lines. It also contains fixes for regular expression searches and a new back end that handles Unicode-encoded files and skipping binary files, the company said.
Komodo 4.3 was released March 6. It supports Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and Tcl, as well as CSS, HTML, JavaScript and XML.
The find-and-replace function makes it easier for a developer to see what the new code will do to the program before committing the changes and replacing what’s already there, said Shane Caraveo, ActiveState’s Komodo product manager. He admits the feature is a functionality of other IDEs that “we never got around to doing until now.
“We allow you to look at what is going to happen, before it happens,” Caraveo said. “So if you wanted… to replace ‘fu’ with ‘bar’ throughout your entire codebase, you can generate a patch without actually doing the replacement and see the differences that would happen if you continue with the replacement. And even after you do the replacement you can undo it.”
Komodo IDE 4.3 adds a feature called Abbreviations that inserts stored code snippets from the Komodo Toolbox at the touch of a key. It also integrates a unit test interface for Perl, PHP, Python and Ruby that allows a programmer to evaluate sections of code for possible failure points before moving onto the next section. Komodo 4.3 can bring in data from external source code control programs from sources including CVS, Perforce and Subversion to access a registry that tracks code changes as a project progresses, Caraveo said.
Komodo 4.3 lists for US$295, although the upgrade is free to those who already have Komodo 4.x.
ActiveState has simultaneously released an open-source version of the IDE, Komodo Edit, which includes in-depth auto-complete and code call tips, multi-language file support, syntax coloring and syntax checking.
Komodo Edit is built on the Mozilla codebase and is licensed under the Mozilla Public License, GNU General Public License and GNU Lesser Public License.
