Microsoft Shares Specs with PWG

June 2, 2008 —  Microsoft is contributing its Web services protocol specification for consumer scanning peripherals to the Printer Working Group (PWG) in order to boost interoperability and make the connectivity process easier for users.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced new interoperability principles, and it has since released thousands of pages of documentation for its various software solutions. On Friday, the company contributed its Web services protocol specification for consumer scanning peripherals—Microsoft Scan Service Definition Version 1.0—to the PWG, a program of the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization.

Microsoft’s Web services protocol specification aims to help companies make their printers interoperable across multiple platforms. According to Microsoft, as a result of submitting this specification to the PWG, these solutions will now be available to any platform that companies need to meet their customers’ interoperability requirements.

The PWG, which includes members from the printer, projector and multifunction device industries, develops standards that make these devices work better with the applications and operating systems supporting them.

Jerry Thrasher, PWG chair and senior standards engineer for Lexmark International Inc., said that Microsoft’s contribution will make a big difference in the group’s effort for industry-wide standardization of networked multifunction device behaviors and capability representation.

“Maintaining a consistent model for behaviors and capabilities of multifunction devices within the industry not only improves interoperability across operating environments, but also helps reduce implementation costs for device manufacturers,” he said.
