New Cisco Software to Strengthen Data Center Virtualization

July 17, 2008 —  Cisco is looking to bolster its virtual data centers with more operational efficiency with upcoming software products.

The company today announced Cisco Wide Area Application Services 4.1 (WAAS), Application Control Engine 3.1 for the ACE 4710 application switch, and VFrame Data Center 1.2, along with various programs and services.

Cisco executives said WAAS 4.1 can utilize virtualization so that customers can deploy platforms like Windows Server 2008 locally on a WAAS appliance. This can reduce hardware requirements.

The new version of the WAAS software has faster acceleration for Microsoft Exchange, Web applications, video and Linux/Unix file sharing.

Application Control Engine 3.1 comes with increased throughput capacity for the ACE 4710 application switch of up to 4Gbps. It now has virtualized load balancing and security services across unified communications and video applications through session initiation protocol and real-time streaming protocol.

WAAS 4.1 and Application Control Engine 3.1 are both expected to be available in the third quarter of this year.

VFrame 1.2, meanwhile, offers end-to-end infrastructure provisioning with the VMware ESX server and Cisco’s Application Control Engine.

New programs to help customers manage their virtualized data centers are also available, including the Data Center Efficiency Assurance Program, a Web-based product to help analyze data center power use. The Efficiency Assurance Program establishes benchmarks for data center facilities.

Data Center Assurance Program 4.0 now has large-scale data center design and implementation guides, as well as new capabilities for video streaming and mobility services.
